Romania needs forward-looking investments in the electricity distribution and transmission sector, without which all power generation projects will not achieve their goals, said Cristina Păun, ACUE Deputy Director, during the “Voices of the Industry” session at the 11th Energy Strategy Summit, the flagship event of Energynomics.

“Until now, investments have been concentrated in the production area, because there was a deficit. But at the international and European level, the message is becoming clearer and clearer to everyone that investments in generation, but also in consumption, will not achieve their objectives without investments in the electricity transmission and distribution sector,” said Păun.

These forward-looking investments need to be provided for in the regulatory framework, together with a range of incentive instruments to enable energy distributors to make them.

“We should start doing them now,” she said.

According to Cristina Păun, the current legislation allows various incentives for certain technologies, such as free connection to networks, but these consume investment budgets without bringing a substantial macroeconomic benefit. However, such investments are necessary because, although they are not visible, they contribute to increasing the quality of the electricity service for consumers.

“Network investments are often invisible to consumers, but they keep the system running. For example, thanks to these investments, the number and duration of outages has decreased year on year and this indicator will improve even more in the future,” added Păun.
