President Maia Sandu announced on Thursday evening that she has signed the application for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union. Moldova’s accession to the European Union, signed on Thursday, is addressed to Emmanuel Macron, President of France, the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, and will be submitted in Brussels in the coming days, said Maia Sandu.

EU Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Oliver Varhelyi said in Iasi on Thursday that the Republic of Moldova will need to make long-term investments of three to four billion euros, saying that this country needs development, more chosen in the context of the military crisis in the region, according to G4media.ro.

Oliver Varhelyi said that 15 million euros were immediately mobilized for the reception of Ukrainian refugees in the Republic of Moldova and that another five million euros will be provided through the Protection Mechanism.

“We mobilized all possible support to immediately help the Moldovan authorities, because these authorities in turn mobilized everything in their power. And obviously they need our assistance and input. We immediately mobilized 15 million euros for humanitarian aid to receive refugees from Ukraine, to provide them with shelter, beds, food. We still have five million euros to offer through the Protection Mechanism. And of course we mobilize the Member States to provide additional support. The authorities and the population are really helping the refugees and we need to support them too. It is obvious that the war that is taking place beyond the border of the Republic of Moldova will have consequences that we must bear together,” said the European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi.
