As more renewable energy plants are installed around the world and the number of electric cars increases, electricity grids are becoming more under pressure. One solution for network optimization is carbon fiber composite cable cores.

”As you build these renewables, you have to evacuate the power. It’s not new within the transmission world that you re-conductor with high-capacity conductors. It has been done although it’s a relatively new technology. We can do it now for distribution too because we have a very flexible core”, said Thomas Wilki, Technical Business Development Manager, EMEA, Tokyo Rope International, at the conference “More renewables for Romania”, organized by Energynomics.

The company created a seven-strand core in several sizes, which is flexible and robust and is suitable for all kinds of power networks.

The new wind and solar farms are coming online, often in areas with weaker networks and they generate an increase in power consumption in general also many conductors are reaching the end of life. At the same time, the move towards electric vehicles will further increase and change the power flow.

Another issue is that deregulation all across Europe and competition is changing the power flow and for the operators, it is difficult to obtain permission for new lines. That is why changing the old conductors can be faster and more beneficial for consumers.

”All these new renewable power plants coming online all across Europe but what we see in many places it’s combined with other issues – a general increase in power consumptions, some of the lines get old and need to be replaced anyway”, Wilki explained.
