Once more the “Renewable Balkans” event brings together regional and worldwide experts to discuss accelerating clean energy transition in the Balkans and address major issues of the sector.

Starting from 2019, the renewable energy sector in Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia, the three Balkan EU member states, is on a path towards rapid growth, the second wave of renewable development promising prospects to massively replace fossil fuel-generated electricity, especially coal. The ongoing transition towards a low-carbon economy and the EU’s ambitious target of 42,5% share of renewable energy in the energy mix by 2030 will drastically shape the electricity sector in coming years.

Western Balkans’ energy mix is primarily dominated by fossil fuels, also imported from outside the region, with serious vulnerability to price shocks in the regional wholesale electricity markets,  while renewable energy generation, excluding hydro power, is relatively limited. The ongoing energy crisis and the countries’ commitments under their membership in the Energy Community and as aspiring EU Member States push towards economies’ decarbonization and renewable energy deployment.

How do the authorities see the industry? What regulations need improving and updating? What are the main policy challenges that developers and power producers face? These and other issues to be discussed to outline the way forward.
