The PPC Group aims to transform Romania into a regional centre of excellence in the energy transition, with significant investments in renewables and storage, despite a volatile legislative context. Alessio Menegazzo, CEO & Country Manager of PPC Romania, announced, at the 11th Energy Strategy Summit, the flagship event of Energynomics, that the company’s objective is to double the installed capacity from renewable sources by the end of 2026, reaching 2.6 GW.

“We want to strengthen ourselves as a regional player focused on the energy transition – not just through green generation, but also through grids, flexibility, PPA contracts and smart consumer services,” Menegazzo said. The plan is public and assumes sustained investment over a medium to long-term horizon, with commitments already made to shareholders and financial markets.

Romania – between private ambition and public incoherence

According to Menegazzo, Romania has remarkable resources, competences and human potential, but lacks a clear political vision and a coherent strategy for the energy transition. “For the time being there are only punctual adjustments – heirupisms that create more problems than solutions. And these discontinuities seriously affect efficiency and confidence in the market,” he warned.

From this perspective, the role of private companies becomes essential. “There is real expertise in Romania, people who have demonstrated competences in international markets – from Rio de Janeiro to Chile and Brazil. We have a native potential, especially in digitisation and cyber security, which we need to tap, backed by consistent policies.”

Lessons from Greece and opportunities in Romania

After the PPC group underwent a major strategic reset in Greece – which repositioned it as a regional leader – the company is applying the same approach in Romania. “We have learnt from the Greek experience that only collaboration, transparency and a shared vision between the public and private sectors can bring real, sustainable results for the benefit of consumers,” Menegazzo said.

PPC Romania has become in just a few years one of the most important players in the renewables sector through a wide range of acquisitions and own projects. Going forward, the company is pursuing both organic growth and consolidation through partnerships, with a focus on smart integration of digital technologies and services.

Energy storage – the solution for balance and protection

One of the central ideas of the intervention was the critical role of battery storage, which PPC sees as the only realistic solution to protect its investments and customers in the face of instability in the balancing market. “We have already experienced the effects of a heirupist managed market. Romania will not escape balancing problems in the near future, be it insufficient interconnections, fragmented legislation or uncontrolled speculation,” Menegazzo warned.

In this context, storage capacities become a strategic pillar for PPC Romania. “We are investing in batteries not only to optimise our own portfolio, but also to be able to guarantee customers a stable, resilient and economically fair service.”
