OX2 has sold a 96 MW ready-to-build wind farm to HELLENiQ Renewables – a wholly-owned subsidiary of HELLENiQ ENERGY Holdings. The wind farm benefits from a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (vPPA) with Ahold Delhaize, a leading international retailer. It is the second transaction finalized by OX2 in Romania, following a contract for a wind farm of similar size signed in 2024.
OX2 will be responsible for the entire construction phase, scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2025. Commissioning is scheduled for 2027. The Ansthall wind farm, located in eastern Romania, will have 15 state-of-the-art Vestas turbines, each with a capacity of 6.4 MW. The project obtained access to the transmission grid through a connection agreement signed in 2024 with Transelectrica.
OX2 has initiated and structured the 12-year virtual power purchase agreement with Ahold Delhaize, covering more than 50% of the wind farm’s energy production. The project supports Ahold Delhaize’s sustainability objectives in its European operations, including its retail network in Romania.
In a press release, Lăcrămioara Diaconu-Pințea, Country Manager OX2 Romania, referred to the company’s commitment to move forward with projects from the development stage, to commissioning and signing of energy sales contracts. “We are strategically positioned to become one of the leading renewable energy companies in Romania, while contributing to the achievement of national targets in the field and to the energy transition”, said Lăcrămioara Diaconu-Pințea.
Once commissioned, the wind farm will produce about 309 GWh annually – covering the annual electricity consumption of 89,000 households – and will contribute to a reduction of about 99,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
In his turn, Paul Stormoen, CEO of OX2, emphasized that “OX2 continues to grow in Romania, reaching a portfolio of 1GW of projects in the development and construction phases”.
OX2 entered the Romanian market in 2021 and has doubled its project portfolio year on year. Onshore wind is the core technology, complemented by solar projects and energy storage systems. Two wind projects totaling 195 MW are under construction or about to start construction. It is currently developing 766 MW in onshore wind projects and 150 MW in solar and BESS projects.
OX2 is leveraging its integrated development model in Romania, covering all stages of the project lifecycle: land acquisition, permitting, development, financing, PPAs, construction, asset management and eventual divestment.
