OMV Petrom announces the completion of an investment in the Petrobrazi refinery, for a new sulfur recovery unit, worth 45 million euros. This project is part of the company’s strategy to modernize its refining capacities, with the objective of reducing its environmental impact.
“This investment of 45 million euros represents an important step towards reducing emissions and improving operational adaptability. We delivered the project safely and efficiently. The new unit allows for the processing of a wider variety of crude oil types,” said Radu Căprău, member of the OMV Petrom Management Board, responsible for Refining and Marketing.
The role of the new unit in the refinery is to treat acid gases in the fuel production process. It is the second of its kind at the Petrobrazi refinery, contributing to the continuity of operations and environmental protection by providing additional gas treatment capacity.
The sulfur obtained from this process can be used in the fertilizer, pharmaceutical, detergent and other chemical industries.
The construction of the new facility was a complex project, involving over 350,000 man-hours. It involved the installation of a new Claus unit for the transformation and disposal of acid gases, gas treatment equipment, as well as pumping systems, pipelines, electrical installations and automation systems. The works started at the end of 2023 and were completed in less than two years, in safe conditions.
Over 2 billion euros invested in Petrobrazi
OMV Petrom has invested over 2 billion euros in the modernization of the Petrobrazi refinery since privatization, with a focus on operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
The company is currently carrying out a major new project, worth approximately 750 million euros, to build a sustainable fuels production unit (SAF/HVO), which is estimated to become operational in 2028 and will also include a green hydrogen component.
