Unit 2 of CNE Cernavodă will remain connected to the National Energy System, the operating parameters allowing continued operation under safe conditions, the company announced in a report sent to the Bucharest Stock Exchange on Thursday. Nuclearelectrica announced that, similar to the shutdown of Unit 1, Unit 2 would be shut down in a controlled manner due to the extremely low, unprecedented level of the Danube, but later backtracked on the statement and noted that U2 would not be shut down.
“SN Nuclearelectrica SA announces that Unit 2 of CNE Cernavodă will remain connected to the National Energy System because, as a result of the analysis of the operating parameters and equipment of Unit 2 carried out by CNE Cernavodă specialists on the night of July 29 to 30, 2026, it was found that the operating parameters allow the continued operation of Unit 2 under safe conditions. The operation of Units 1 and 2 of CNE Cernavodă is carried out based on the strict monitoring of the operating parameters, safety margins and on the basis of the associated procedures in drought situations, and thus, as long as the analysis of the parameters allows operation in compliance with all nuclear safety norms, Unit 2 will remain connected to the SEN”, the statement states.
According to the company’s representatives, the evolution during the night was stable for the key parameters and at this moment there are the necessary prerequisites for the temporary continuation of the operation of Unit 2.
“Nuclearelectrica makes all possible efforts to continue operating under maximum safety conditions and to contribute to the stability of the National Energy System, continuously analyzing and monitoring all parameters that could decrease to minimum levels without affecting the safe operation of the facilities. Considering both the current situation and the hydrological forecasts regarding the level of the Danube, the shutdown of Unit 2 may be necessary at any time, depending very much on the negative fluctuations that occur and their effects on the systems the power plant”, the press release states.
On Wednesday, Nuclearelectrica announced that Unit 2 of the Cernavodă NPP will be shut down in a controlled manner and disconnected from the National Energy System, due to the low level of the Danube.
“Similar to the shutdown of Unit 1, Unit 2 will be shut down in a controlled manner due to the extremely low, unprecedented level of the Danube, caused by the severe drought, based on the plant’s procedures applicable in situations of severe drought. The shutdown occurs as a result of the most recent forecasts issued by the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA). In the situation where certain parameters associated with the low level of the Danube approach the permitted operating limits, in compliance with nuclear safety procedures and standards, the nuclear plant’s experts apply the necessary operational measures to maintain safety margins, including the decision to shut down one unit or both if the situation requires it,” Nuclearelectrica said in a statement.
Unit 1 of CNE Cernavodă is shut down in a safe state, starting on Tuesday.
