Costel Alexe, the Minister of the Environment, announced on Monday morning the causes of the excessive pollution that was registered in the Capital during Sunday night in Bucharest. He said that there were uncontrolled fires, but there are also suspicions regarding possible industrial activities in Bucharest and Ilfov. He also announced that he requested the dismissal of the management of the National Agency for Environmental Protection Bucharest, as it did not submit reports on pollution.

The minister said that the national network recorded exceedances of up to 8 times of the PM10 suspension particles and “very, very large exceedances” of NO2 – nitrogen dioxide.

“At the moment, at station B1 – Lake Morii, at station B3 – Mihai Bravu or B6 – the Military circle we had these overruns, but now, when we have this press conference, we have conditions normally in terms of pollution of the air in Bucharest. The stations from the National Air Quality Monitoring Network say this, and the independent sensor network that is in Bucharest today also,” said Alexe, according to Digi 24.

“I asked for the dismissal of the APM leadership,” Costel Alexe announced, arguing that it is not normal for him to find out about pollution on Facebook. The minister also added that the press will receive a list of the largest regional polluters.
