President Klaus Iohannis said on Friday that he is determined to negotiate ”down to the last notch” for Romania to obtain as much money as possible for cohesion funds and the common agricultural policy from the multiannual budget of the European Union.

“The idea is to find through such discussions bilaterally the common denominator for the multiannual budget. I come up with the ideas we have elaborated in Bucharest. We have a pretty well-thought out line for the budget we want, starting from the premise that under any terms, the budget for the next year has to be a little bigger than the budget for the ending year,” said Iohannis, according to Agerpres.

“We have expectations related to the funds dedicated to cohesion policy, there are several funds that come into this category that are vital for us to reach an acceptable convergence as soon as possible. Also, for us they are very important those for agriculture and in these two chapters I am very determined to negotiate down to the last notch to obtain as much money for Romania, but there are certain conditions that are important for us, for example the flexibility between the funds. It is also important that, for example, the transition fund towards a greener economy should not be part of cohesion, but to be additional,” said Iohannis before meeting with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
