In recent weeks, developments in the international prices of the two categories of products made in diesel cheaper and gasoline prices to rise in Romania. At present, diesel is about 4% cheaper than gasoline. In less than two weeks, the price of gasoline increased by 0.12 lei, according to economica.net.

From June 1 to June 19, the price of diesel dropped by 0.13 lei, while gasoline prices rose 0.08 lei. The difference between the two types of fuel thus reached 0.26 lei, diesel being cheaper by 3-4% as gasoline.

The explanation for this can be found in the evolution of petroleum products quotations on the world stock markets, mainly the US, where the last two months have brought a rise to 120 dollars a ton for gasoline, from 570 dollars to 690 dollars a ton. In the same period, diesel stood at 575 dollars, with light variations. Basically, gasoline quotations are 20% above those of diesel.

Between 1 -19 June, leu-dollar exchange quotation did not have spectacular developments, so it can be considered that significant price increase of gasoline by comparison to diesel is nearly entirely due to developments in the price of petroleum products on exchanges.

Considerable price increase of gasoline in recent months has been highlighted by CBS News, which cited official data. “Reference prices of gasoline in the US market in May recorded the strongest growth in six years, month to month. Gasoline prices spiked in America with 10.4% in May compared to April, the largest increase since June 2009”, shows journalists at CBS News.
