The Chimcomplex chemical plant will put into operation, this year, several gas turbines, which will also be able to use hydrogen, with the aim of making the energy consumption related to the production of goods more efficient.

“This month we are putting into operation in Râmnicu-Vâlcea the first two high-efficiency gas turbine electricity units, with a global energy yield of over 90%. We are putting 33 MW into operation now, in July or August another 16-17 MW will follow, and by the end of the year another 7 MW”, said Dumitru Coman, Deputy General Director of Chimcomplex, at the conference “More renewables for Romania”, organized by Energynomics.

These turbines will also be able to use hydrogen, produced by Chimcomplex from water through the electrolysis of brine. The next step for the company is to use hydrogen as a vector for chemistry, so that only excess hydrogen is used to generate electricity.

Chimcomplex consumes a power of over 90 MW electric and over 110 MW thermal, and in order to reduce its energy consumption it “was forced” to size the thermal energy installations according to the thermal energy consumption.

In fact, the chemical plant has been using the combination of gas and hydrogen in its current activity since 2009. “This helped us get through the crisis periods. When you are a big consumer of energy, you have to integrate it into efficient industrial processes”, stated Coman.

He added that in the case of Chimcomplex, the integration of energy and chemistry is the solution for the decarbonization process. Processing energy and “ennobling” it by using it to create goods and commodities should be the direction to follow at the national level. “We believe that the integration of energy and chemistry will be a solution to promote decentralized energy, to generate energy where it exists and the possibility of ennobling it,” said Coman.

Chimcomplex already uses nanotechnology in its technical processes and thus achieved a 40% reduction in primary energy consumption.
