Frankfurt. We are at one of the largest exhibition halls within the Messe Frankfurt complex, where several hundred Huawei partners, including those from Romania, are receiving the latest details about the Chinese company’s new innovative equipment and inverters. China’s dominance in the field is undeniable, and, despite the effort of European companies to face competition through initiatives such as Buy European, the costs and technological advances given by decades-old R&D are finally having their last word. Huawei officials are launching the FusionSolar 9.0 smart photovoltaic solution in Europe today, in front of several hundred guests.
It’s not just about technology, but about the marginal reduction in the total operating cost (LCOE) of solar parks, about improved operational safety and even greening, by eliminating SF6 gas from the process, about network formation, balancing and more.
“The question is no longer how much renewable capacity we can install, but how do we ensure that this capacity is smart, grid-stable and economically resilient throughout its lifecycle. FusionSolar 9.0 is our answer to this challenge for the European market,” says Jacky Chen, President of Huawei Digital Power Europe.
Huawei’s strategy in Europe is focused on delivering measurable value throughout the lifecycle – enabling developers, utilities and asset owners to achieve higher yields, more reliable operations and active grid participation in an increasingly complex regulatory and market environment, says Jacky Chen.
Industry Insights: Expert Voices
The launch summit brought together leading voices from the European and global energy sector, reflecting the breadth of stakeholder confidence in FusionSolar9.0’s technical and commercial proposition.
“The SUN2000-506KTL bankability and innovation assessment confirms that Huawei’s next-generation inverter sets a new benchmark for large-scale solar power in Europe. The grid-shaping capability combined with this level of system integration is what the market has been waiting for.” “Scaling power without evolving safety design will scale risk, not progress. Reliable large-scale deployment requires parallel investment in safety innovation – and that’s exactly what we see in FusionSolar9.0,” says Patrick Zank, Business Development Manager, VDE.
“The transition from waste to a self-optimizing energy system is not theoretical – it is achievable today by designing closed-loop microgrids with the FusionSolar9.0 solution. The capabilities introduced in this generation of smart PV systems fundamentally change what is possible for European utility developers,” – Nicola Goffredo, CTO, Fortore Energia S.p.A.
“The BOS benchmarking of the Huawei SUN2000-506KTL inverter demonstrates clear and quantifiable benefits in reducing system costs. For project developers evaluating technology options, the numbers speak for themselves,” said Jose Maria Ponce Lopez, Project Manager, ATA Renewables.
“Standardizing grid formation is no longer just an ambition – it is the path to ensuring the stability and resilience of the power system in the future. The industry needs technology that can achieve this standardization today,” added Billy Qiu, Senior Manager, TÜV SÜD Greater China
Market Deployment and Ecosystem Readiness
FusionSolar9.0 is not a concept – it is already being deployed on a large scale. Since October 2024, Huawei has been deploying the solution in various scenarios in the Chinese market, and international adoption is accelerating rapidly. Over 10 GW of projects globally are currently under construction using FusionSolar9.0, as developers across multiple markets re-evaluate their designs in favor of a lower BOS and superior solution lifecycle economics.
A common concern at this stage of the platform upgrade – ecosystem readiness – has been proactively addressed. The entire 1000 V AC supply chain, comprising PV modules, switches, transformers and other key components, is mature and ready for large-scale European deployment. Huawei has been working with ecosystem partners throughout the development process to ensure seamless integration from day one.
What the future of solar power looks like
With the European launch of FusionSolar9.0, Huawei reaffirms its commitment to supporting the continent’s energy transition with technically advanced, commercially robust solutions built for the long term. By enabling solar power plants to become smart assets that support the grid – not passive generation sources – FusionSolar9.0 positions developers and utilities to confidently navigate the new era of high-penetration renewables.
“FusionSolar9.0 is not just a product update. It is a fundamental rethinking of what a solar power plant should be capable of in 2026 and beyond. We are proud to bring this to Europe at exactly the time when the market needs it most,” says Steve Zhang.
FusionSolar 9.0 is based on industry-first technological innovations:
- Industry’s first 1000V AC PV system: After transitioning from 500V to 800V AC, Huawei reaches the 1000V AC threshold, enabling larger array configurations and reducing installation costs (BOS).
- World’s first grid-forming string inverter: Extends grid-forming capability directly to PV solutions, fundamentally changing the way solar assets support the grid.
- Europe’s largest smart substation (11MW): Dramatically reduces system complexity on an industrial scale.
These innovations are delivered through the new 506KTL smart string inverter and the new generation of 3000/7000/11000 kVA smart substations, together forming a complete, integrated, and large-scale platform.
Added Value: Quantifiable Benefits
FusionSolar 9.0 transforms technical innovations into four areas of tangible value:
- Optimized ROI
-
- BOS cost reduction of 0.27-0.55 eurocents/Wp with 11MW array configuration enabled by 506KTL inverter
- Commissioning cost savings of approximately 70,000 euros per -200MW project by leveraging PV array energy through grid-tie capability to replace conventional diesel gensets during commissioning
- Longer PV string design and extended MPPT voltage range increase effective generation hours with earlier morning start-up and later evening shut-down – particularly valuable in time-of-use pricing markets
- Active grid support
The world’s first intelligent grid-tie inverter addresses directly the most pressing challenge in Europe regarding grid stability. Four key capabilities define its performance:
-
- 10ms reactive power generation in response to voltage instability — three times faster than conventional grid-tracking inverters
- Improved short-circuit ratio (SCR), increasing renewable transmission capacity
- Intelligent virtual inertia (0–20s) to support frequency stability as synchronous generation is phased out
- Automatic night-time reactive power recovery after fault clearance, preventing exposure to grid code penalties
- Enhanced safety and reliability
-
- Industry-first intelligent hybrid cooling system improves heat dissipation capacity by 30%, reducing thermal stress and extending product life
- Enhanced three-level intelligent DC safety protection (SSLD v2.0): active fault identification, millisecond-level disconnection, and intelligent self-locking to prevent fault propagation due to manual errors
- New generation IGBT module increases voltage withstand capacity by 25%, reduces power loss by 10%, and increases maximum junction temperature by 20%
- Fully automated and intelligent manufacturing line for 506KTL inverter, ensuring consistent quality on a large scale.
