Romania’s energy strategy could be ready in September-October 2015, but it should have been accompanied by a re-industrialization strategy, said Andrei Gerea, Minister of Energy, Small and Medium Enterprises and Business Environment.

“If we talk about energy consumption, we need to know what can be developed: metallurgy, automotive, agriculture with irrigation and so on. You have to know how much we will consume and where”, said Gerea, quoted by Agerpres.

“At this point we have no idea in the re-industrialization department and the ministry we will have to find an answer, obviously go on efficiency, on ensuring an energy mix to provide comfort and competitiveness.

Beyond the issue of the strategy that we wish to complete by September-October we have another problem, that is the next step in our relationship with the International Monetary Fund, European Commission and World Bank”, said Andrei Gerea.

Former Minister of Energy, Răzvan Nicolescu, presented at the end of last year a part of the future energy strategy. According to the document prepared by the Department of Energy, the new energy strategy goals are security of supply, maintaining a bearable price for final consumers and environmental protection; investment needs in the sector amounts to 100 billion euros by 2035.

“To attract new investment in the energy sector, Romania must ensure the existence of a stable market, predictable and transparent, public policies and strategies and removal of barriers to attracting potential investors. We believe that the necessary investments in the Romanian energy sector is, for the period 2015-2035, about 100 billion euros”, reads the draft energy strategy put into public debate in December by the Department of Energy.

The document presents the current state of the national energy system, goals set for the period 2015-2035 and commitments made by Romania to the European Commission.
