Electricity average price fell by more than 50% in February yoy

The average price of electricity fell by 50.36% in February, compared to the same period of 2023, in the day-ahead market segment (PZU, DAM), in nominal terms, according to OPCOM data consulted by Energynomics.

Thus, the average closing price was of 347 lei/MWh in February 2024, compared to 699 lei in February 2023. The volume of transactions increased by 3.09% in the aforementioned period, up to 1.6TWh, however, in February compared to January 2024, it decreased considerably, by 22.82%. Also compared to January 2024, the average closing price on PZU decreased by 20.42% in nominal terms.

The value of transactions in February, on PZU, was of around 561 million lei, almost 48% lower than in the similar period in 2023 and almost 40% lower than in January 2024. The share of PZU transactions in the forecasted net consumption was of 37.4%.

On the intra-day market, where the market share is of only 3.57%, a similar scenario was marked, with a price of almost 342 lei/MWh down by 51.52% in February compared to the similar month of 2023 and with almost 28% compared to January 2024.

On the centralized market for bilateral contracts –PCCB-LE-FLEX, the weighted average price of general contracts was of around 395 lei/MWh, on a volume of almost 1.26 TWh, through 39 contracts. For delivery in February, the price was higher, at about 513 lei/MWh, on a volume of about 241 GWh, through 62 transactions.

On the centralized market with continuous double negotiation of bilateral electricity contracts, no long-term transactions were registered, but only with delivery in February – around 45 GWh were traded at a weighted average price of 684.5 lei/MWh.
