The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it is opening an in-depth investigation into foreign subsidies for Chinese firm Goldwind’s activities in the EU wind energy sector, the EU Executive said in a statement.

Under the Foreign Subsidies Regulation (”RSS”), the European Commission will assess the activities of Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd. (”Goldwind”) in the production and sale of wind turbines and in the provision of related services in the EU. The EU Executive is examining whether Goldwind has received foreign subsidies that could distort the EU internal market, according to Agerpres.

Possible foreign subsidies include grants, preferential tax measures and preferential financing in the form of loans. The Commission’s preliminary concerns are that these foreign subsidies could improve Goldwind’s competitive position in the internal market and could negatively affect competition for the supply of wind turbines and related services in the EU.

In its in-depth investigation, the Commission will examine whether the preliminary findings are confirmed. The opening of an in-depth investigation is without prejudice to the outcome of the investigation, the Commission said.
