At Light + Building 2026, ABB introduced new enhancements to Welcome IP, its IP-based access control and door communication platform, with a clear focus on faster installation and simpler access for users. The update is designed for both residential buildings and commercial projects, bringing benefits for developers, installers, building operators and end users.
At the center of the launch is a new unified Access Module that combines multiple authentication methods in a single device, including PIN, fingerprint, RFID, NFC and ultra-wideband (UWB). With this approach, ABB aims to reduce the number of components required on site, simplify specification and installation, and deliver a more consistent, design-led appearance at access points.
One of the most important additions is a new hands-free access experience, combining short-range Bluetooth with precise ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. This allows doors to be unlocked through accurate smartphone-based proximity detection, helping to minimize false triggers while enabling device-based authentication with a strong focus on privacy. ABB also emphasizes that the system works independently of Wi-Fi or mobile data availability and is compatible with the latest generation of smartphones. When a mobile device is not available, users can rely on secure backup options such as the integrated fingerprint reader or temporary PIN codes generated for guests.
In its press release, ABB also places strong emphasis on deployment. All devices in the system can be connected through a single PoE network, helping to simplify infrastructure and shorten installation time. In addition, Microsoft Teams integration and native SIP support allow door calls to be received and managed within the communication workflows already used by businesses. This makes the solution relevant not only for new projects, but also for retrofit applications.
Welcome IP remains a scalable and future-ready platform, with compatibility for ONVIF Profile S cameras, remote maintenance capabilities and firmware updates. According to ABB, the system is flexible enough to support projects ranging from single-family homes and villas to larger mixed-use developments, positioning intelligent access as part of a broader smart building approach focused on comfort, security and operational efficiency.
