Digital transformation brings major cyber security challenges for the energy sector

The digital transformation brings major cybersecurity challenges in the energy sector because, if until now energy systems were isolated, not connected to the outside world and strictly oriented towards the tasks for which they were designed, digitalization has transformed them into intelligent devices, capable of communicating with each other and with the outside world, said Mircea Stremțan, Sales Director SentryOT, Enevo Group.

“This decade has witnessed an acceleration of digital transformation, and one of the biggest challenges generated by this process is cyber security. But this intelligence and connectivity comes at a price: potential cyber vulnerabilities. And when we are talking about a critical system like energy, these vulnerabilities are of huge importance,” Stremțan said at the DigitALL 2025 conference organised by Energynomics.

To meet these challenges, Enevo Group has developed SentryOT, a platform dedicated to cyber security in the OT (operational technologies) area, specifically for the energy sector. Unlike in the IT area, where they are mainly protected, in the OT area physical assets are protected, and these are not only more costly, but also much harder to recover in the event of an attack. The SentryOT solution is already operational for at least one customer in Romania, and the data is stored on-premise, in the customer’s infrastructure. In some cases, Enevo can provide its own infrastructure, which is overseen and owned by the customer.

“In the coming weeks we will be announcing an important partnership with an institution that will strengthen customer confidence in this platform and guarantee the high standards of security we offer.”

A first step in strengthening cyber resilience is understanding the assets that need to be protected. This is where the whole defence and operational continuity strategy starts, Stremțan added.

The “DigitALL 2025” conference was organised by Energynomics, in partnership with reputed organisations such as the CIO Council and EPG, with the support of our partners: ABB, Corning, Datacor, Eaton Electric, Enevo Group, Enevo Group, Procesio, Renomia, script.ai, Sunwire, Vertiv.
