Constanta is consolidating its position on the map of leading international scientific events, after being confirmed as the host city of the 39th edition of the ECOS (Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems) Conference, which will take place from 28 June to 3 July 2026. The decision was taken in Paris, during the ECOS 2025 (June 29 – July 3), when the Executive Committee of the prestigious US-based international society voted in favor of the Romanian candidate. At the same meeting, Prof. Eng. Eden Mamut, from Ovidius University of Constanta, was elected Executive Director of the International ECOS Society for a one-year term.
The event will bring to Constanța around 500 specialists from around the world, representing some of the most advanced schools of thought in the energy field. The stated aim is ambitious: to assess the latest advances in the technical thermodynamics of complex energy systems, in multiscale and multiphysics modeling, analysis and optimization, in advanced data digitization and processing, in quantum technologies and other innovative methods for reducing environmental impact and resource efficiency. In addition, the organizers aim to facilitate an integrated approach, linking the energy sector with other economic sectors, social issues and human health and safety.
Univ. prof. dr. dr. eng. Eden Mamut will head the 2026 conference organizing committee. “It will be a unique opportunity for the Romanian energy sector to showcase its achievements. Our specialists and those from across the South-East European region will be able to initiate far-reaching contacts and collaborations,” said Professor Mamut.
The organization of the 2026 edition in Constanta also has a symbolic significance: the works will mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen (1906), an economist and thinker with global impact, born in Constanta and famous for his pioneering work on the link between thermodynamics and economics, and the 145th anniversary of the birth of engineer George (Gogu) Constantinescu, known for his achievements in sonic mechanics and for the design of the Carol I Mosque in Constanta, one of the first reinforced concrete buildings in the country.
Professor Mamut is a well-known figure in academia and research. He teaches technical thermodynamics at the Faculty of Mechanical, Industrial and Maritime Engineering of Ovidius University, is director of the Institute for Nanotechnologies and Advanced Energy Systems of Ovidius University and member of the Advisory Council for Sustainable Development of the General Secretariat of the Romanian Government. His career includes, among others, chairmanship of the Scientific Council of the European Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Platform (2015-2017) and membership of the World Academy of Sciences and Arts – WAAS, from 2023.
