Chiriţoiu: A new support scheme for big consumers

Large energy consumers could benefit from a scheme to reduce their bills with the value of emission allowances, as the price of the energy they consume increased because of the bigger price of certificates.

“It is an analysis at the Government level, given the rising electricity prices, to see how we can support the big consumers to avoid situations where there is a risk of relocation – there are companies that could leave the country because of the high electricity prices. We already have a green certificate cost reduction scheme of up to 85% and we are also looking at reducing emissions allowances. That is, to give a reduction to offset the high cost of carbon emissions certificates,” said Competition Council’s president Bogdan Chiriţoiu, quoted by e-nergia.ro.

“The price of emission allowances has increased greatly. It affects the price of coal-based energy and this raises the price of electricity across the market, because the market price is given by the cost of the most expensive technology, that is currently coal. So when the carbon certificate price increased, also surged the price of electricity as a whole,” he said.

“It is a possible support scheme in the European Union, there are member states of the European Union where it applies, France, Germany, for example. Now the European Union prepares an update of these schemes, it is an opportunity for us to introduce these schemes too,” Chiriţoiu added.
