The President of the Competition Council, Bogdan Chirițoiu, has been elected as President of the Board of Directors of the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER).

The term of office is two years, and the performance of the activity involves, among other things, attendance at the regular meetings of the Board of Directors. Bogdan Chirițoiu was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors by the Council of the European Union, at the proposal of the Romanian government.

“The decision of my colleagues on the Board of Directors to entrust me with this position provides the framework for the continuation of the projects and objectives pursued within the agency. The priorities of my mandate are the appointment of a new director of ACER and the development of a better integrated, competitive and efficient European energy market,” declared Bogdan Chirițoiu, President of the Competition Council.

Bogdan Chirițoiu believes that it is important to strengthen the collaboration between ACER and national regulatory authorities, essential for increasing resilience to external shocks, in a context in which energy policies will continue to represent a major challenge for the European Union — both in terms of competitiveness and energy security, and decarbonization objectives.

“Energy policy will continue to represent one of the main challenges of the European Union, both from the perspective of economic resilience and competitiveness, and decarbonization objectives. I come from a national institution, the Romanian competition authority, which has significantly benefited from cooperation with agencies from other Member States, under the coordination of the European Commission, and, as a result, I am convinced that many national regulatory authorities would equally benefit from strengthening collaboration in various areas, including — but not limited to — REMIT investigations,” added Bogdan Chirițoiu.

REMIT (Regulation on Wholesale Energy Market Integrity and Transparency) is the Community regulatory act aimed at preventing market manipulation and insider trading on wholesale energy markets (electricity and natural gas).

ACER is the European Union agency that contributes to ensuring the smooth functioning of the European electricity, hydrogen and natural gas markets. ACER supports national energy regulators in carrying out their regulatory function at European level by providing them with a framework in which they can cooperate to ensure efficient decision-making on matters of cross-border relevance.
