Integrating physical and cyber security is no longer optional, but a necessity in the digital age, and investing in modern technologies, from smart video surveillance with AI to automation and rapid response capability, is no longer just a cost, but an essential element for efficiency, protection and security, said Aurel Dosan, vice president of sales at Datacor, at the DigitALL 2025 conference organised by Energynomics.

“Physical security, alongside cyber, is the foundation of digital trust. Attackers are increasingly targeting the interface between IT and operational OT systems, which is why a joined-up approach with centralised security management systems is essential. A physical attack can disable a data centre in seconds and the effects are felt immediately by users and businesses,” said Dosan.

Data centres are vital to business, government and digital life. That is why they must be protected at all levels. Datacor’s proposed model includes four levels.

The first layer is the outer perimeter and aims to protect the enclosure and control access to the building. The second layer covers access to the building, including administrative and support areas. This is followed by the technical room and the server room, where access has to be controlled with dual systems, i.e. card plus biometric reader, for additional verification.

Finally, access to racks and equipment is particularly sensitive, and each cabinet must be secured, with mechanical or electronic locks, and access allowed only to authorised persons, especially in multi-customer shared data centres.
