The price of the carbon certificate reached 37 euro/tCO2 on Wednesday and could increase to 40 euro at the end of the first quarter of this year (Q1), according to specialists’ estimates.

Thus, the price of the EUA certificate on the ICE ECX exchange in London opened this morning (03.02.2021) the EUA trading sessions at 34.97 euro/tCO2 and increased to 37.11 euro/tCO2 until 14.00 (6.12% more), according to Carbonexpert.

At the same time, the EUA certificate increased by 6.5% on Tuesday, 02.02.2021, this being a new record of growth in the same day. The upward trend was driven by the opening of EEX primary market auctions and investment fund reporting on January transactions. According to the estimates of an international trader, the price will reach 40 euro/tCO2 at the end of the first quarter, but Carbonexpert analysts believe that “it is possible to see, however, even earlier, a price increase up to this threshold”.

According to the new BloombergNEF report on the energy transition, investments in decarbonisation reached a new record of $501.3 billion in 2020, exceeding the previous year’s value by 9%, despite the economic disruption caused by the pandemic.

Global investments in renewable energy capacity increased by 2% to $303.5 billion in 2020, ranking second after volume in 2017 ($313.3 billion) and marking the seventh consecutive year with a volume of over $250 billion.
