The state will remain the majority shareholder, „without any doubt”, at Cupru Min Abrud, a company that exploits the Roșia Poieni deposit, said minister of Economy Mihai Fifor. “I answer you as a minister and I assume what I say. I do not take into consideration this idea of privatization. I think that at the moment Cupru Min SA shows that it well alive. With very serious and healthy investments, Cupru Min SA can be a company that shows that we can produce in our country with no problem”, said Fifor in a press conference held in Abrud, when asked whether he had given up the option of privatization of the company that exploits the Roșia Poieni deposit, which is almost 60% of Romania’s copper reserve, according to Agerpres.

The Minister stressed out that the state “will remain a majority shareholder, without any doubt”.

On his first visit at an objective from the portfolio of the Ministry of Economy, as mentioned, Mihai Fifor said that he wanted to start with the exploitation at Roșia Poieni in order to give a signal. “We want to encourage this area, to develop this area. We know very well that the entire area relies on this industry”, he added.

Minister Fifor also said that Cupru Min SA is now “an example of good practice, a Romanian company that has managed to overcome a very difficult period in its existence and which, at present, produces very good”.

At the same time, he explained that through the governing program, PSD and ALDE have committed themselves to supporting this company in order to develop it and to revamp it.

“Of course, there are many other issues that are still being discussed at Cupru Min SA and at the level of the Ministry of Economy, there are very interesting investment plans for the next period. In the governance program we planned to restart the metallurgical industry in the area. We are still discussing what is the best option for doing this. Zlatna was discussed, we will see to what extent and how we will develop this”, said the minister.
