The partnership between Romania and Serbia is based on both the institutional framework of the Joint Commission for the Iron Gates and the permanent collaboration between Hidroelectrica and Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), said Iulius Dan Plaveti, CEO of Hidroelectrica, at the international conference Iron Gates 2026.

The Hidroelectrica boss highlighted the strategic importance of the Iron Gates systems for Romania and Serbia and the shared responsibility of the two states for their safe operation, maintenance and modernization.

“The Iron Gates prove that we can build together. Today, our responsibility is to continue to operate, maintain and modernize them together,” he said.

Plaveti also emphasized that the partnership between Romania and Serbia is based on both the institutional framework of the Joint Commission for the Iron Gates and the permanent collaboration between Hidroelectrica and EPS, and the exchange of information, technical dialogue and coordination of operating and monitoring practices are essential for the safety and reliability of the two facilities.

For his part, the president of the Romanian Committee of Large Dams (CROMB/ROCOLD), Cătălin Popescu, emphasized the role of hydropower in ensuring the flexibility and stability of the energy system and the need to adapt the infrastructure to new technological and operational requirements.
