Volkswagen has decided to begin concrete negotiations on a planned new multibrand production plant in Europe with the remaining potential locations, chairman Herbert Diess said on Tuesday.

The decision was made at Monday’s supervisory board meeting, Diess said at the annual general meeting of Volkswagen held in Berlin, according to a statement posted on the company’s website.

Germany’s DPA news agency reported in April that Volkswagen has narrowed its choice of potential destinations for a planned new car factory to Bulgaria and Turkey. Other potential candidates are Romania and Serbia, according to SeeNews.com.

„Oliver Blume is now also tasked with Group Production and recently also became responsible for Group Quality. He is preparing selection of the location for the new multibrand plant I previously mentioned,” Diess said.

In November, Diess said the company was looking for a location for a 1.4 billion euro ($1.6 billion) multi-brand factory in eastern Europe which is expected to start production after 2022. The company plans to move the production of the Skoda Karoq and Seat Ateca SUVs to the new factory, which would employ 5,000, from the plant in Kvasiny, the Czech Republic, Diess said back then.

According to media reports, Volkswagen will make a decision on the location of its new factory in October.
