The competitiveness of Romanian companies in the EU risks being deeply affected by the European Commission’s Mobility Package 1, for which the Romanian Ministry of Transport and the Romanian MEPs must act against this document, draws attention to the Romanian Union of Road Transporters of Romania (UNTRR) in a press release.

“We point out the uncertain situation of the Romanian road haulage companies, whose competitiveness on the European market risks being deeply affected by the extremely restrictive provisions of the Mobility Package 1. We remind that the Mobility Package 1 was published by the European Commission in 2017 on the background of protectionism in growth of the Western States members of the Alliance, but could not be adopted in the previous European Parliament following the numerous UNTRR interventions and protest actions alongside the road transport associations of several affected Member States, as well as the opposition of the Romanian MEPs and other Member States,” the document submitted by UNTRR states.

The Romanian carrier organization claims that the Mobility Package 1 was initiated by the Western European Alliance and distorted the market to the detriment of Eastern European carriers.

“The Romanian Minister of Transport and the new Romanian MEPs, regardless of their membership of the EP political groups, have the responsibility to defend the future of Romanian carriers in the EU through coordinated interventions with all the affected Member States for the rejection of the Mobility Package 1 initiated by the Western Road Alliance. We note that although these new common rules seem to apply uniformly across the EU, their impact is different, mostly affected being the Eastern and peripheral states: rising costs will be much higher for peripheral carriers, thus distorting conditions of equal competition on the road transport market in the EU,” says the UNTRR release, quoted by Agerpres.
