MEP Siegfried Muresan proposed on Tuesday that, in the future multiannual budget of the European Union 2021 – 2027, half of the European funds allocated to the Republic of Moldova will go towards investments in energy and transport connectivity. Through this major allocation, the Republic of Moldova will reduce its energy dependence on the Russian Federation, said Siegfried Muresan, according to Hotnews.ro.

Mureșan said that the European Union has allocated 740 million euro of non-reimbursable funds for the Republic of Moldova between 2014 and 2020. “During my visits to the Republic of Moldova, I saw that this money was used to build biomass-based thermal power plants in schools, to modernize public transport or to rehabilitate public roads. 25% of this money was allocated to energy and transport connectivity, to reduce the energy dependence on the Russian Federation,” said Muresan.

“I think we need to do even more, which is why, when we decide on the European Union budget for the period 2021 – 2027, my proposal is that 50% of the money allocated for the Republic of Moldova will go towards energy and transport connectivity. Thus it further reduces the energy dependence of the Republic of Moldova on the Russian Federation, and we will also demand that the total allocations to Moldova be increased in the future multi-annual budget of the European Union for 2021 – 2027,” explained Siegfried Muresan.
