Rockwool, the world’s largest producer of basalt mineral wool products, announces new global decarbonization targets, verified and approved by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative.

Key elements of Rockwool’s decarbonization plans include reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions from the factory by 38% by 2034 (compared to the reference year 2019) and reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions from non-factory outlets by 20% by 2034 (compared to the reference year 2019).

These absolute emission reduction targets, which complement existing sustainability targets, equate to an ambitious one-third reduction in Rockwool’s life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions by 2034, while ensuring a continuous reduction in carbon intensity (carbon emitted per tonne produced) of production.

“We are among the few energy-intensive production companies whose science-based emission reduction targets have been verified and approved by SBTi. These new goals are based on the fact that we are already a company with net negative carbon emissions. Although not many companies can make this statement, we also know that it is not enough, which is why we have taken on this ambitious decarbonization path,” said Jwo Birgersson, CEO of Rockwool Group.

The new decarbonisation commitments are based on Rockwool’s existing status as a company with net negative carbon (CO2e) emissions, as during its use, the Rockwool construction insulation product sold in 2019 will save 100 times the carbon emitted for its production.
