We continue the extensive presentation of the Energy Evolution 2015 nominations with the Outstanding Developments category. Only one of the projects below will be awarded during the Gala on December 3. However, each of the companies and all the people involved in these projects deserve our respect and the widest promotion possible.

Electrica SA

Smart metering – 130,000 metering points already installed

Leader in electricity distribution and supply in Romania, Electrica Group is leader in terms of smart metering implementation.

Electrica started to install smart metering systems in residential areas since 2005 and currently has the largest number of metering points, as well as the most ambitious pilot-projects.

ELECTRICA Group currently has installed Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) systems for the smart metering of industrial consumers and managing electricity distributed for over 85,000 metering points. Also, Electrica currently has installed smart metering systems, in residential areas, managing a number of over 45,000 consumers.

Electrica’s distribution subsidiaries are carrying out pilot projects to assess the optimal technical solutions and related costs for implementing Smart Metering systems, projects approved by ANRE, at the level of approximately 45,000 metering points. The largest pilot project will manage over 23,000 metering points. These pilot projects are in final phase of implementation and will be commissioned by the end of the year.

Luxten Lighting Company

Rediscovering the urban identity of Calea Dorobanți area

The energy efficiency project had as main objective the optimization and efficiency of technical and functional parameters of the public lighting system on Calea Dorobanți and the surrounding areas and the specific objective of rediscovering the urban identity of the area and highlighting it. The project was financed by EBRD through the Energy Efficiency Finance Facility granted to Local Authorities in Romania (MFFEE).

Technology: pioneering project within the concept “Smart by Luxten”, where the LED technology, telemanagement system, urban aesthetics and reducing electricity consumption and operational costs were prerequisites for creating a reference project for Bucharest, which is the largest project financed by EBRD in Romania so far.

Target of the project: getting an energy efficiency greater than 25% compared to the existing situation. The technical and functional performance of the project certified by the accredited auditor of EBRD were 36.83%.

Indicators of the project:

  • Energy saving – 93.19 MWh/year
  • Reducing carbon dioxide emissions – 65.54 t CO2/year
  • Reducing operational costs with the lighting system in conditions of safety and continuity with EUR 23,060/year
  • Energy efficiency – 36.83%

SPEEH Hidroelectrica SA

Record profit at Hidroelectrica

Hidroelectrica managed to register a record gross profit in the first 9 months of 2015, in conditions of an extended period of hydrological deficit.

In the first 9 months of 2015, Hidroelectrica posted a gross profit of RON 875mln, by approximately 7% higher than the profit recorded in the first 9 months of 2014, in conditions in which hydrological deficit in July – September 2015 significantly affected the company’s production.

Hydrological deficit in July-September 2015, labeled in the media as “the most severe drought in the past 50 years”, significantly affected energy production of Hidroelectrica. Danube flows were reduced to 2,400 cubic meters per second, half compared to last year’s average, an even greater decline being recorded on inland rivers.

In these very unfavorable conditions, Hidroelectrica managed the performance to obtain a gross profit of RON 875mln in the first 9 months of 2015, by approximately 7% higher than the profit obtained in the same period of 2014, and a net turnover of RON 2,014mln.
