Pitești Nuclear Fuel Plant (FCN Pitești), a branch of Nuclearelectrica, fabricated the nuclear fuel bundle with the number 150,000. FCN Pitești is the only authorized manufacturer globally outside of Canada for the production of fuel bundles for CANDU 6 technology, by AECL Canada and Zircatec Precision Industries Inc. Canada.

Annually, Cernavodă nuclear power plant consumes about 10,000 such bundles. Regarding production, items coming out from FCN Pitești recorded a failure rate lower than the limit of CANDU System Design Authority.

“FCN Pitești goal is to provide high quality nuclear fuel for operation under maximum security of Cernavodă nuclear units, to develop and continuously improve the production lines, to innovate and deliver added value for Nuclearelctrica by integrating proprietary products into a nuclear circuit with outstanding results”, said Florin Gheba, Director at FCN Pitești.

The 150,000 nuclear fuel bundles produced a quantity of 167 TWh of electricity; the same amount can be obtained by burning 333 million tons of brown coal, 166.5 million tons of pit coal or 47.5 million tons of fuel oil.

“The Romanian nuclear industry is currently an effective and efficient model for many other areas and a big advantage for Romanian energy needs in terms of energy system, environment and consumer. In more than 30 years, the Romanian specialists were able to initiate and develop a nuclear program which places Romania first in the world in installed power use coefficient, so they managed to capitalize flawlessly on natural, material and human resources.”, stated Daniela Lulache, CEO at Nuclearelectrica.
