German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she disapproves of the European Investment Bank’s decision to ban funding for natural gas projects by the end of 2021, several days after the German government had agreed to the new guidelines. “I don’t think that this is right,” Merkel told parliamentarians in a debate on the federal budget and said that Germany would rely on natural gas as a bridging technology as it exits both nuclear and coal, according to Clean Energy Wire.

In a parallel speech in the European Parliament, European Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen said she was happy about the “progress” the bank made “to strengthen its role as EU climate bank.”
