In the presence of the representatives of the European Commission, the Ministry of European Funds and the organizations of Bankwatch Romania and Greenpeace Romania, the Mayors of the Jiu Valley have signed “Jiu Valley for Just Transition Partnership” to achieve the objectives of energy transition and economic development in the Jiu Valley communities, Greenpeace announces.

Signing the Memorandum is a collective commitment to facilitate a gradual, efficient and participatory transition from a coal-based economy to a more sustainable and diversified economic model. The local authorities in the Jiu Valley have taken part in the development of a transition strategy and implementation plans, including the identification of projects that may benefit communities in the Jiu Valley.

The “Jiu Valley for Just Transition Partnership” emphasizes participative collaboration and the involvement of public and private organizations, trade unions, social partners and civil society. Mayors have committed themselves to developing projects so that no social category is disadvantaged in this energy transition. The meeting took place in the framework of the Carboniferous Regions in Transition platform in the continuation of discussions between local authorities, associations, trade unions, the business environment and representatives of the European Commission, organized in April at Petroşani University, when the need for collaboration between the authorities was emphasized implementing beneficial projects for the entire region.
