One of the strategic projects envisaged by Liberty Steel, part of the GFG Alliance, as part of the 1 billion euro plan for the development of the Galati steel plant, aims at significant investments in renewable energy projects, of about 50 to 100 million euro.

According to the general director of Liberty Galaţi, Bogdan Grecu, the purpose of these investments is to reduce the carbon footprint of the company and also to provide energy resources at competitive costs. An important factor is also that Galaţi County is one of the most favorable – as for wind power, number of sunny days – in the country, for investments in green energy.

“We want to invest in wind turbines and solar panels in locations inside the plant and on the land we have available, to take advantage of the possibilities that exist in this area. The necessary investment is between 0.5 and 1 million euro per MW, depending on the type of technology, how big the project is and the prices that will be negotiated with the equipment suppliers. We will implement projects that, in stages, will finally provide about 20 percent of our electricity needs, which means more than 100 MW installed,” explained the general director of Liberty Galaţi, Bogdan Grecu, quoted by the local publication Viața Liberă.

“In terms of investments in renewable energy, things have already started. We have identified areas, potential suppliers, we identified a large part of the project stages, now we are entering into a more detailed discussion to find stakeholders in co-financing this project,” said the director.
