Governor of the National Bank of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, said that joining the Eurozone is no longer a panaceum, and if Romania joins the single currency without being prepared, then the problems will not only be solved, but on the contrary, they can worsen.

„You will see that not all countries are happy in the eurozone, which means that entry into the eurozone is no longer a panaceum (…) If we are entering unprepared, not only it does not solve the problems, but also it gets worse. (…) The need to ensure a high degree of sustainable convergence, this necessity is explicitly stated in the Maastricht Treaty itself. These clear criteria, are including benchmarks on the need for and the sustainability of price stability, fiscal position, public debt and budget deficit, long-term interest rate convergence, exchange rate stability,” said Mugur Isarescu, quoted by Agerpres.

The NBR governor mentioned, regarding the adoption of the euro by our country, that Romania is not harmoniously developed, and only the big cities and metropolitan areas, such as Bucharest – Ilfov, meet the necessary conditions for entering the euro area.
