Romania imported in January 2017 an amount of natural gas of 281,200 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), about 271.5% (205.5 thousand toe) higher than the quantity imported in the same period of 2016, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Domestic production of natural gas totaled in the first month of the year 742,000 toe, 1,200 toe (0.2%) over that of January 2016.

According to the draft Energy Strategy of Romania, published on the ministry website, annual production of natural gas is expected to fall slightly to an average of 9-10 bcm for the period 2016 to 2030, according to Agerpres.

The document says that natural gas production will decrease, after touching a new high of 132 TWh in 2025 due to production from the Black Sea at 96 TWh to 65 TWh in 2030 and 2050. The scenarios provide a drop to zero gas production until 2045.
