The first edition of Energy Policy Group’s Summer School took place between 23 and 27 July, 2018 in Bucharest, with a focus on “Smart Transformation in the Energy Sector.”

The Summer School enjoyed the participation of 15 young energy professionals from Romania and across the world, and of 24 reputed speakers, Romanian and international. In one densely packed week, they discussed the challenges and prospects of the energy sector and of the policy and market tendencies that are shaping the smart transition towards a decarbonized economy.

The opening day was dedicated to the global, European and regional trends, the future of renewables and their integration in the power system, as well as the overall measures taken for decarbonization of the energy sector. On the second day of the Summer School, the group visited the control room of Unit 1 in Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, having the opportunity to understand the current status of the nuclear industry in Romania and around the world. The third day of the Summer School focused on the clean transition of the transport sector, including the challenges and prospects of alternative fuels and e-mobility. The next day was hosted at an educational net-zero house, where the participants had the opportunity to focus on digitization, demand-side management and energy efficiency in buildings. Friday, the final day of the Summer School, included an interesting discussion about the energy trilemma, followed by the first-ever World Energy Simulation Game held in Romania (a role-playing exercise that enabled people to try out the policies and investments that would allow them to reach their goals on climate change).

The 2018 edition was only the first step of an ambitious educational project. Building on it, EPG Summer School 2019 will take place again between 25 July and 2 August 2019 in Bucharest. This year, we will focus more on decarbonization initiatives around the globe and Europe in particular, without neglecting the major role of renewable energy and its evolution over the years. Additionally, special attention will be given to digitization, smart technologies, energy efficiency, emerging products and services, while also considering the requirements of sustainability and affordability. The main ambition of this year’s edition is to draw a balance between interactive seminars and debate sessions (webinars, documentary screening) led by reputed experts, and field trips to different energy assets and facilities (wind farm and nuclear power plant).

EPG Summer School 2019 represents a great opportunity for graduate students and young professionals all over the world to interact, debate and connect in order to grow a community of alumni and lecturers. Furthermore, the Summer School aims to facilitate cross-disciplinary and cross-border collaboration to advance the energy transition goals.
