The world’s largest online retailer is teaming up with oil giant Shell and its German gas station chain to create a network of convenient pick up locations for its goods, pitting it against express delivery companies including UPS and Deutsche Post DHL, Handelsblatt has learned.

American online retailing giant Amazon is partnering with Anglo-Dutch oil company Shell to supply its own pick-up centers at gas stations and reduce delivery costs, potentially hurting express delivery companies such as DHL and FedEx.

Shell manager István Kapitány told Handelsblatt Amazon has set up lockers at 10 Shell stations in Munich since July to test the service. Customers can ask for their goods to be delivered to those lockers, to be picked up at a convenient time.

Neither Amazon or Shell were willing to give more details, but industry sources say the plan is to have hundreds of Shell stations participating in the future. The oil company has 43,000 petrol stations worldwide.
