ABB has recently equipped the Electrical Substations Laboratory as part of the Power Engineering Faculty with a state-of-the-art medium-voltage switchgear ABB’s UniGear ZS1 Digital (17.5 kV, 2000 A, 50 kA). The equipment is supplied by the ABB factory in the Czech Republic.

The students and the graduates pursuing Masters and PhD studies will now be able to study new ABB technologies, sensor networks, protection and control systems, using the performant ABB equipment available within their laboratory.

This type of switchgear is the first digital one delivered in Romania containing a Relion® protection relay (REF615), a circuit breaker, as well as current and voltage sensors. This apparatus has been especially designed for didactical purposes and features glass covers and internal lighting. Digital switchgear combines the latest digital technologies within ABB’s well-known and established medium-voltage switchgear. ABB’s digital switchgear solutions integrate innovative protection, control and sensing devices, where all measures, statuses and commands are reliably transferred on a real-time Ethernet communication bus over the IEC 61850 protocol.

“ABB is very active in supporting technical education in Romania. We are happy to provide access to new digital ABB technology to the future engineers, as a practical support in their study process”, said Tomasz Wolanowski, Country Managing Director of ABB Romania.

Earlier this year ABB sponsored the same laboratory with an RTU540 SCADA system, that will integrate and remotely control the UniGear ZS1 Digital switchgear. ABB’s specialists keep frequent contact with the university and provide all the necessary technical support and training.

Other Romanian institutions of higher education with laboratories equipped with ABB apparatus in the last years are the Technical Universities in Iasi, Bacau, Cluj-Napoca and Târgu Mures.

ABB is a pioneering technology leader with a comprehensive offering for digital industries. With a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB is today a leader in digital industries with four customer-focused, globally leading businesses: Electrification, Industrial Automation, Motion, and Robotics & Discrete Automation, supported by its common ABB Ability™ digital platform. ABB’s market leading Power Grids business will be divested to Hitachi in 2020. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 147,000 employees.
